Design-build Ethical Ground Improvement solutions, ready to adopt
We provide science-led, design-build ground improvement and material stabilisation solutions across New Zealand, combining modern stabilisation technology, proven methodologies, and real-world experience.
We develop site-specific solutions that improve performance, increase efficiency, and reduce environmental impact. Through Ethical Ground Improvement, we upcycle ground in situ to reduce landfill pressure, demand for quarried resources, unnecessary cartage, and reliance on traditional dig-out-and-replace methods. The result is stronger, longer-lasting ground with less waste, lower environmental impact, and better value throughout the project lifecycle.

Our solutions
We offer in-house laboratory based, cost effective design and construct solutions for the following aspects in the civil engineering sector:
- Subgrade Modification & Stabilisation for road foundations to reduce pavement layer thicknesses
- Ground Improvement to achieve TC2 / TC1 requirements for house pads
- High demand unsealed road stabilisation to reduce grading frequencies
- Deep trench stabilisation
Ethical Ground Improvement
We provide permanent stabilisation for low-CBR and high-plasticity soils, improving weak or unsuitable ground conditions to deliver reliable, high-performing construction platforms. Our approach also allows for the effective treatment of high-moisture and sensitive subgrades, enabling work to proceed where traditional methods may struggle.
By improving in-situ materials rather than removing and replacing them, we significantly reduce the need for excavation, cartage, and disposal of unsuitable material. This not only lowers environmental impact but also improves constructability, increases programme certainty, and helps keep projects moving efficiently from start to finish.
Recent research commissioned by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has highlighted plastic geotextiles as a source of persistent microplastic pollution, estimating that they are already releasing microplastics into the environment and that these emissions are likely to increase as materials age. Our Ethical Ground Improvement (EGI) approach removes the need for plastic geotextiles, instead applying advanced soil science to create permanent engineered soils without leaving a lasting plastic legacy.

Health, Safety & Environmental Commitment
Pozzolan is committed to delivering safer, cleaner, and more environmentally responsible ground improvement solutions. Our dustless in-situ stabilisation technology helps reduce exposure to respirable dust and harmful particulates, while minimising disruption to surrounding communities, horticultural sensitive areas, waterways, and ecosystems. By keeping sites cleaner, improving visibility, and reducing clean-up requirements, the process supports better working conditions and a lower environmental footprint. This risk reduction ensures that projects meet increasingly stringent health, safety, and environmental standards.
How we work
We take a rigorous, evidence-based approach to every project, ensuring solutions are tailored, tested, and proven in real-world conditions before full-scale implementation. Our process includes laboratory testing to identify optimal binder pathway and improvement philosophy, followed by on-site trials to validate performance under actual construction conditions. From there, methodologies are refined to suit site-specific requirements, with continuous quality assurance throughout construction to ensure consistency and reliability. This structured approach ensures stabilised materials consistently meet or exceed performance requirements, delivering significant improvements in compressive and tensile strengths, durability, and long-term performance.
1 - Understand the challenge
We begin with due diligence: listening to the client, understanding the project requirements, assessing the ground and site conditions, and identifying the key problems that need to be solved.
2 - Test, design, and refine
Through accurate laboratory bench testing, we develop a site-specific solution — the right “recipe” for the ground conditions, project needs, and performance outcomes required.
3 - Present the solution
We provide a comprehensive design-build proposal, including methodology, budget, programme, and clear benefits compared to traditional methods. Our solutions are prepared for client, consultant, or third-party review, approval, and adoption.
4. Deliver the works
Once accepted, Pozzolan carries out the works as a specialised subcontractor, testing and validating the solution on site and delivering the same science-led approach from design through to completion.
